FAST FOOD EXAMPLE: A Trip to
McDonalds
The Quarter Pounder
When you go to McDonalds and order a
Quarter Pounder, you are getting 1/4 pound of meat.
1 pound = 16 ounces (oz), and 1/4 pound is only 1/4 of that,
or 4 ounces of meat. In that 4 ounces of meat there is about
1 ounce of fat. In that ounce of fat there is 80 milligrams (mg)
of cholesterol.
(1 Quarter Pounder = 4 oz meat
= 1 oz. fat = 80
mg cholesterol)
Remember that you should not
take
more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day.
The Egg McMuffin
Say,
for example, instead of eating a Quarter Pounder your child orders
a breakfast Egg McMuffin. This has 260 mg of cholesterol. A Sausage
McMuffin with Egg has 290 mg of cholesterol which is almost all
of the amount of cholesterol allowed by an adult in an entire
day. So, it is better to eat lunch at McDonalds than breakfast.
(Sausage McMuffin = 1/2 oz fat = 290 mg cholesterol)
Imagine
how much cholesterol you child would be eating in one meal if
you add fries to a meal. You will also be adding more cholesterol.
The Egg McMuffin has only
1/2 oz. of fat, but the Quarter Pounder has 1 oz. of fat, so
why does the Egg McMuffin have more cholesterol?
You
cannot just count fat grams, you must look at the cholesterol.
The egg in the Egg McMuffin is very high in saturated fat which
has cholesterol. Eggs are one of the highest sources of cholesterol.
You have to keep in mind that if the food your child is eating
has an egg in it, your child is getting close to the amount of
cholesterol he should not exceed in a day.
What is the WORST thing to
eat at McDonalds (highest
cholesterol)?
The
Sausage McMuffin with Egg. Why? The Sausage McMuffin has almost
300 mg of cholesterol and 500 calories. The total calorie need
of your child per day is about 2,000 calories. By eating just
one Sausage McMuffin he already is getting 1/4 of his calorie
needs and has almost reached the cholesterol limit for one day. |
