Heart Picture Gallery: Aneurysm of the Atrial Septum

This beautiful girl, Erica Jubin, was inflicted with heart failure, fever, and had developed Pulmonary Aneurysm as the result of a clot which formed around her Atrium. She had her surgery at the Mayo Clinic, and she is doing great.

This is an echocardiogram of Aneurysm of the Atrial Septum, which is like a weakness in the wall between the Right Atrium and Left Atrium (Atrial Septum). The aneurysm appears as a small bulging in the echocardiogram. This is usually a transient finding in premature babies, but it can sometimes induce abnormal heart beats (premature atrial beats). It can sometimes be associated with very fast heart rhythm (tachycardia).

This is a drawing to clarify the echocardiogram photo above.
