Third-Stage Operation: Fontan Operation

When your child is 2 to 3 years old he will need more oxygen supplied to him to grow, so doctors will then perform a Fontan Operation.

This operaton diverts the blood coming from the lower part of the body through the Inferior Venacava to the main Pulmonary Artery.

The blood coming back from the upper body to the heart goes to the Superior Venacava and is diverted through the existing Glenn Operation to the right lung.

The blood coming back from the lower body to the heart goes to the Inferior Venacava and is diverted through the additional Fontan Operation to the left lung.

Now there is no mixing of the pink and blue blood in your child's heart. The blood coming from the Left Atrium doesn't find any blue blood coming from the Right Atrium to mix with and so it continues to the Left Ventricle pink, and goes to the brain and the rest of the body pink, and your child will look pinker and grow better.
