Second-Stage Operation: Glenn Operation

When your baby has become 6 months to 1 year old with a BT Shunt it will not be enough to supply him with the oxygen needed for him to grow. The doctors now perform a different type of shunt operation called a Glenn Operation.

This operation diverts all the blood coming back from the upper body through the Superior Venacava (the major vein coming from the upper body).

After this operation is done all of the blood coming from the upper body is diverted to the lungs so more pink blood is coming back from the lungs to the left side of the heart.

However, all the blood coming back from the lower body is still going to the right side of the heart, crossing the ASD, and mixing with the pink blood in the Left Atrium and Left Ventricle.
