When do doctors perform
Bacterial Endocarditis Prophylaxis?

Bacterial Endocarditis Prophylaxis is recommended for the following procedures:


Dental Procedures:

  • Any dental procedure where bleeding is anticipated
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental Implants
  • Root canals
  • Any procedure that may involve gum bleeding or periodontal procedures

Respiratory Tract:

  • Any procedure that may induce bleeding
  • Tonsillectomy and or adenoidectomy
  • Rigid bronchoscopy
  • Flexible bronchoscopy


Gastrointestinal Tract:

  • Any procedure that may involve cutting through the mucosa or induce bleeding
  • Surgery on the bile duct
  • Biopsy

Genitourinary Tract:

  • Cystoscopy
  • Urethral dilation
  • Urinary catheterization if bleeding anticipated or the presence of infection is suspected
